    Default buying used? 99 and up

    So i asked some questions about AFM and VVT in my first post because I am looking for a used truck.

    In your opinion what year/years do you think are the best to buy used with 100,000 or more miles in the 5.3l class? What years should I avoid? Needs to be 4x4 with preferably the off road package(z71) and extended cab. What are things to look for and watch out for when buying a used Sierra/Silverado?

    They will all be ok. Every year seems to have it's own issues. Those years are all known to have issues with instrument cluster stepper motors. Check the exhaust manifold bolts, many end up broken off. Put it in 4x4 on a test drive and listen for a noisy front diff. Other than that just check the normal things, oil, trans fluid, look for leaks, ask for maintenance records. (especially trans service, diff t-case fluid changes) I would even do a car fax if you find one you like. I think they are around $30, but for $10 more you can get three instead of one. I did that when I bought my 2003, then I sold the extra 2 to friends for around $10

    In my experience guys selling trucks on Autotrader or in the newspaper have taken care of the truck much better than guys selling on craigslist. I am not saying it is always like this, I know many guys that sell nice vehicle on CL. but when I was looking for my 05 most of the the CL trucks I looked at were not well maintained or even cleaned. While most of the autotrader truck sellers seemed more serious about selling and had their trucks clean, maintenance records ready for viewing, and ready to go.

    Thanks for all the information. I would have never thought about craigslist having worse vehicles then the paper or auto trader. Doing the car fax will also bring up where it has been for maintenance wont it?

    I am not saying that cl vehicles are worse. I am just sayin gin my experience I have found better vehicles with owners who care more about their vehicles and selling them at autotrader. Car fax will only report maintenance if it was at a reporting service center. Which most independent shops are not

    Just to chime in on the service records on carfax: my parents traded their 96 suburban in when they bought their '12. The dealer listed it in their used inventory with a carfax attached. Just curious, dad looked at the carfax (as we do 95% of our own maintenance and repair work) and it showed being in a transmission shop twice in the year before he traded it. Both entries were for a flush, filter change, and fill... When it actually was a full transmission rebuild, followed by replacement as they royally screwed up the rebuild. So, just beware with what you might find...
