    Default Howling from rear end ?

    2000 AWD Safari . Bought it 6 weeks ago 114, 000 miles Howling noise appeaars from rear end ? Does this need immediate attention ?

    I would say, "yes" Check the fluid level to make sure it has fluid in it. It shouldn't take long to pull the cover off and see if there are any signs of problem. It wouldn't hurt to poke around with a stethoscope to see if the noise is from the pinion bearing or the axle bearings. If you're not up to these yourself, have someone look it over. Caught early, you may only need to replace a bearing. A full rear end rebuild is expensive.

    I agree that is should be looked at, because after 12,000 miles that howling becomes annoying as hell and gets louder....not that I've been driving with mine howling like for that long.........

    i too say get it checked as soon as possible----putting off will only increase the cost later and maybe a safety issue...mike
