    Default It is 2014, We need to disband Automotive Dealerships completely.

    I just priced some trucks today and boy was there some sticker shock on 2015 models. Imagine how much money a consumer could save buying direct from the manufacturer.

    I believe there needs to be a class action lawsuit taken to the supreme court to disband all third party dealerships all together.

    North Carolina is trying to ban Tesla from direct selling to North Carolina Residents because it is un-fair. I would argue that this is actually progressive, capitalistic idea and it saves consumers money by not dealing with the middle man.

    I already know a number of people that support purchasing direct from the manufacturer for vehicles.

    One reason when I was on active duty I always waited to buy new vehicles when I was stationed overseas through the Exchange/NEX new car program, the reps were hourly or salary and there was no dealer mark-up or shipping/destination charges. Not to mention no sales tax.
    We bought new vehicles for thousands less.

    Right @tbplus, There is so much money wasted in dealing with dealerships these days it is almost sickening. People should be able to order a vehicle like they order anything else online.

    Just tossing out a question......if we didn't have dealerships, where would you go for warranty work?

    How about test drives?

    And I guess, the other thing to consider, if the manufacturers started to sell single vehicles, instead of bulk sales to dealers, they would need a lot more staff in the sales department. This cost would be added to the price of vehicles.

    Online Walmart is not much cheaper than in store Walmart.

    I get the impression that today's dealers what you to run to them for everything. They try and sell more than what is needed and when you have a problem, well, YOU have a problem. Rare to find a customer oriented car dealer.

    My Burb has been to a dealership like 3 times in 269,000 miles. None in the last 169,000 + . Hard to make money on repairs when you build in quality vehicle.

    In Europe they had what were called "Associated shops", a privately owned shop with Factory trained mechanics that could perform maintenace or certain repairs on brand vehicles. A larger shop would normally have mechanics trained in all three American made brands and sometimes Japaneese autos too.
    Not sure how its done in Canada but here in the U.S. there are privately owned shops and chain repair shops that are authorized and certified to complete factory maintenance and repairs, including warranty work.
    The practice is more common with larger trucks or commercial vehicles, a shop we use at work does lots of repairs for 2 local GM dealerships, warranty, maintenance, or repair.

    I'm not too crazy about dealership either, BUT, with a lot of dealerships you get to 1. Take your time, You just get up and walk out. You can always come back with a new number.

    2. if recalls or warranty work of whatever, a good service manger can save you a lot of money. I had a problem with my 2003 Corvette, turns out the BCM was bad, he ordered it replaced and since they had the seats out, he put on a new set of seat rails, about $500 and he put it on the BCM and the warranty work order. He figured who's going to ask about a set of seat tracks ? It's hard to say thank you to a website.

    While I agree that many dealers are terrible, I think that having no dealerships would not be a good idea. Dealers no longer care what you want, they want to sell you what they think you should want. When we bought my wife's new vehicle it was a very eyeopening experience. I contacted many dealerships about the purchase. The contact was made in person and online. In person the dealers only wanted to sell me a certain thing. No matter what I said I wanted, they wanted me to have something else. That was of course more money. Contacting them online had surprising results. Most dealers have an "online specialist" that only fields online customers. Some of the dealers I contacted took more than a week to respond. I finally found one the responded almost immediately. The salesman was very attentive. Sent me a list of vehicles on their lot that had just what I wanted along with some other vehicles that had less than I wanted. I set everything up and we drove over an hour to the dealership. The experience went like it should at a dealer. The guy asked what we wanted. Showed us many vehicles with our requirements and even offered to order one if they did not have the color we wanted.

    The dealer service departments are a joke in my opinion. Unless, of course you find a great service writer and manager. Some of the things we had happen to us at our local GM dealership were ridiculous. Broken interior panels left with super glue oozing out after they attempted to hide that the broke them during a repair was just one issue. In my opinion, if you find a great honest service department then you should go to them, even if it is out of your way. I don't understand why anyone would go to a dealer for anything other than warranty work, unless of course you get some sort of discount or know someone there.

    As far as their fees making vehicles more expensive goes, those charges are always negotiable. When I bought my 98 sonoma, I paid $200 over their invoice price. I just kept saying that I was not going to pay that fee and I would go somewhere else that would waive the fee and my dealer matched it.

    The dealership I use is 40 miles from my home. Bryner Chevrolet in Jenkintown PA. Owned by the Peterson family. They have owned it since it opened in 1928, made it through the depression, post war reluctant sales and since they have been through the ups and downs in the auto market they can handle the rough seas of the automobile marketplace. And They own everything in the buildings and all of the inventory is own by them, No floor plan and while Chevrolet/GM is the main company banner, they work on anything built by GM. They have the talent to fix anything from a Hummer to a Chevy Sonic. But they have moved about 2 miles from their old original building. They bought Hill Cadillac Inc. But they didn't fire everyone like GM would have done. They hired all of the technicians and they can now say they service anything General Motors has ever build. how many shops can still have mechanics that still know how to do an wheel alignment on a car with King pins up from ?
