If I remember correctly there is a 1 second prime on them when the key is turned to the run position. There is a relay that runs it but it has been years since I worked on one.

first i would crank it with your starting fluid then run some Sea Foam through it ( take out the vaccuum hose to your power brake booster and put it in the top of the can and tip it up slowly so that it sucks all the fluid from the can. once the can is empty plug the vaccuum hose back in to the power brake booster and rev the motor (not really high revs) until the smoke stops coming from the exhaust. then turn it off, let it cool down again and see if it makes a difference. that sea foam will clean out the whole intake system that way and remove gum, glazing, varnish and gunk from everything. I just rebuilt a 350 with 130,000 miles on it after running that stuff through the motor before taking it apart it left the internal components so clean you could eat off of them. everything was clean and shinny. if that doesn't work and you are getting that kind of pressure to the injectors I would look at replacing the injectors myself. if it's throttle body injected as most of these that year are you may just need to have the throttle body rebuilt.
