That this year marks the 30th anniversary of the "CEL" - Check Engine Light. The standard name now is "MIL" - Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Which we all know about OBD1 and OBDII. And with the OBDII there are really only two worst case senerios and do you know what they are?????

Well I see the curiosity has ran out, so the other part of the answer is grossly incorrect air/fuel ratio. Misfire emits large emissions and will mostly likely destroy the converter(s) if you have more than one and if it's driven continusously.
Excessive rich air/fuel ratio can damage or destroy your converter and a lean mixture will cause harmful cylinder detonation, that leads to internal engine faulure if not treated. That be that guys....

Funny you mentioned it this way, I had a 1998 Tracker that I left the light on for 67k miles, was from the EGR valve, supposely. Actually from the valve that electriclly opens/closes when necessary that was sporatic, but the truck never gave me problems, got 30 mpg and stayed on until speedo went out and gave another code for the VSS. So chicks can't be the blame all the time, sometimes the light can
be BS. The truck had 155k on it when I traded for the Burban, I am happy.

As the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light glares at me from the dashboard of my Suburban like a disapproving mother-in-law, I begin to wonder...
Is it worth it?
And then I look across the yard at my Gran Torino and think, nope, it sure isn't. But I'll put up with it for my wife's sake.
The MIL/CEL/SES is the bane of my existence and one of the supporting reasons why my wife and family and I moved so far from Dallas. It's definitely cheaper to live out here where every twelve months, a brake/horn/wiper/lights check is all that's needed for Trooper Bustyerballs to not write you a $125 ticket, as opposed to spending $600+ annually to get the old heaps to pass emissions sniffer testing.
