Update: I just ordered a bunch of LED's off of ebay. When they get in, I will update this thread on how to convert the heater controls and all lighted switches to LED also.

Did you ever get those LEDs? I am anxious to see if you were able to modify the heater control lighting!

You can buy a different needle kit... I've seen kits that are just the replacement needles...

Do you know how different this process would be on a 97? I really want to do this.

I totally forgot I had posted that. yes, the LED's came in. I used standard 5mm and 3mm LED's because to the best of my knowledge there is no premade LED designed for this specific application. I picked up a second heater control for a dollar at a swap meet, so i used that for my swap. All you have to do to change the heater controls is open it up (remove screws, pull the knobs off so you can access the front of the circuit board). Just pull the white plastic away from the unit. If you try to pry the little clips on the side, you are more likely to break them than accomplish anything. Once it is open, all you have to do is desolder all the existing bulbs, and solder in an LED with the proper resistor. You can also remove the little circuit board at the bottom and swap out the bulbs in there (for the air recurculation, defrost, A/C buttons, etc - these had been burnt out on both my units, so i though they didnt have lights at all). If you want more even lighting and are good with that stuff, you can find a way to put a couple more led's in, such as behind the red on the temperature knob, which is a bit more difficult to see. I used 5mm blue LED's for the main circuit board, with the proper resistors that came with them. For the smaller circuit board, I used 3mm blue LED's with the same provided resistors. I do not have pictures of the process, but if you are good with a soldering iron, it is pretty straight forward. I am on holiday in Phoenix now, so when I get back home to Canada, I will take some night pictures of the finished result.

Awesome. I would love to see the finished result. Do they match the other bulb colors on the cluster?

Can't wait for those pics! Have a good vacation

this would be an awesome mod to go with my blue footwell lights. and hard would it be to paint the needle a different color?
