Open induction on 2000 silverado

I'm not thinking as going as far as to add a cold air kit to my truck but i'm feeling the stock set up is choking my engine out a good 5hp, does a cone type filter by its self work as a open intake or do i need to buy a whole new intake set up to help at all?

yeah i was thinking i could tear that whole thing out and band clamp the cone filter right on the intake pipe, but i heard silverados are pretty sensitive when it comes to pressures and such

Here is mine (need another new fiter) but it runs great and sound nasty when you step on it!
