It is a buyers market right now, I would see what else is out there. According to the Kelly blue book it is about 2000 over what it is worth.

What engine? 1500, 2500, 3500? 2wd or 4wd? All these have an effect on value.

A quick look at autotrader suggests that 8k is about average for an asking price. Assuming it's in good mechanical condition and you believe him when he says he's taken good care of it, I'd say you wouldn't be getting ripped off. On the other hand, I don't think you'd be taking advantage of him.

Give it a thorough mechanical inspection (if you aren't up to it yourself, have someone else inspect it). If it looks like it's in good shape, then it would be up to you to pull the trigger.

Looks like a nice truck but are you sure you don't want to look around for that extended cab? I can't do regular cabs anymore, just can't. I payed 6300 for a similar truck but with an extended cab and 125k instead of 98k. I vote keep that one in your back pocket and keep looking.
