    Default 99 K2500 fuel gauge

I have a 99 Chevy K2500 classic p/u. When the fuel tanks reaches @ 1/2 full the gauge starts bouncing and gets worse the lower the tank gets. What could this be and how to fix? I have heard the sending unit is part of the pump and is in the tank and is expensive, but I found a sending unit on line that doesn't have the pump withit for @ $60.Before I order just wanted to make sure.

I've got a '99 1500 that had the same issue. I obtained a used sending unit from a friend, but ended up replacing the fuel pump (which came with a sending unit) to the tune of about $300. Spendy, but it worked.
