If you have vin#s your local GM parts dept. can tell you. I had a list of #s, if I can find I will post them.
When you look under the hood there will be a few stickers in the front. One of these stickers should say the the correct info i.e. year, liter size, etc.

Ditto on the VIN# , it will tell you just about everything from gear ratio to paint code!

it is the 8th digit of the vin. What year is the truck? This will tell you exactly what it came with because you can not change it. If it is a 2000-2006 and the 8th digit is a T then it is a 5.3, if it is a U then it is a 6.0 a V is a 4.8 and a W is a 4.3V6

I figured it out, the B means the L33 5.3 SFI engine, T is for the LM7 5.3 SFI, and Z is for the flex fuel 5.3 with MFI... The difference between the B and T 5.3's is that the B (L33) is rated for 310 hp while the T (LM7) is rated for 295, but both offer 355ft/lb of torque. The power difference comes from the fact that the L33 is the aluminum block version of the LM7, otherwise they are mechanically identical.
Turns out I have a L33, which I guess is lucky for me because I always assumed I started out with 295 hp.
This is the website for the 2006 GM vin cards:
http://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vi.../vincard06.pdf
you have to have acrobat reader to view them.
Likewise you can view the vin cards for any 2000-2009 vehicle from this site:
