Default Starting work on my '97 2500 GMC

Hey guys! I haven't been around in awhile but I was wondering if you could point me down the right path on a few things. I drove a '97 GMC 2500 across Canada last year and parked it a my Father-in-laws place. Going to bring it back to Calgary In a couple of months and want to do a few thing to it so here goes. FYI ... truck is a 7.4 L(454) 4wd with an 8-bolt wheel.

    # 1 - Will the rims off a '08 or '09 2500 GMC fit my '97? I think they will but would love an answer.

    # 2 - I installed an "Air Raid" cold air intake. Made a good differance in the truck but it vibrates really bad. The company was no help and I have done all that I can think of. The problem seems to be the single point of attachment on the fender. Has anyone had this problem? Got an answer?

    # 3 - I'm going to get rid of that big stupid muffler that sucks all the life out of my truck. The truck has daul cats and O2 sensers. Should I put ONE double in / double out muffler back on or should I use TWO single mufflers, stacked together, to make it a true dual exhaust. Pros/Cons? Another Idea? Let me know.

    # 4 - The truck has only 132,000 kms (about 85,000 miles) and was used a a fifth wheel hauler and as will happen with 5th wheels, the tailgate got bent. I'm having trouble finding a used one. What yrs will wrk? '88 - '98 or just '96 - '98? Again the truck is a '97.

Here's a pic of the truck that I posted a while ago. Trucks the same but I've added Stainless step pipes. I'll keep the pic coming as I get in to the truck. Won't be staring fo a bit some I've git sometime to figure things out. Any and all advice will help.

#1 - Don't know about the rims, sorry.

#2 - What I've done in the past with other cars is to get a piece of banding material and attach one end to the pipe (usually tucked in between the filter and the pipe) and mount the other end to the vehicle by bolting it down. You will want material that is thick enough to retain it's shape, but not too thick to where you can't bend it into place.

#3 - What exactly is it you're looking to get out of a muffler? Performance, sound, etc. What's wrong with the current one you have on there?

#4 - Don't know about the tailgate, but I would imagine that almost anything from the body style era will work.

    to ct9a :

The problem with the stock muffler is that it is to restrictive. The system on my '97 is the same as it is on the 6L in the last body style. There is a complete dual system until you get to the back of the truck. Then 5" or 6" total exhust(both pipes) go into the muffler and constrict to into 2"-3" inside (had a friend cut the same muffler open), then out to a single tailpipe. Looking to get a few more mpg and the added HP would be a bonus. Truck will be used to tow my camper and quads. Not at all interested in a REALLY loud exhaust note so "boom tubes" or "cherry bombs" are out.

    to 95CTburb19 :

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure since GM changed from bar to cable supports then made the gates thinner in '95 or '96. Should make it easier to find a good one now. Not the first time you have help me out so I appreciate it.

#2 - My friends truck had the same problem we solved it by tack welding a square patch on the top and bottom of the inner fender at the mounting point, we used 2 8"x8" pieces of steel. If you dont want to weld it on you could bolt it at the 4 corners (this is how it was on the truck that gave us the idea).

#3 - My 97 Suburban (7.4) has dual mufflers, it makes the truck a little louder (depending on the mufflers you use), and I did notice a little performance boost when separating the exhaust. The double in double out is a bit restrictive.

1 - i think the rims will work as long as the bolt pattern is the same.
2 - have no experience with air aid but sounds like a stupid design
3 - I would do the true duals cuz it will sound better and you may get a little more power from it. it will be more expensive tho cuz you have to buy 2 mufflers.. However, a single 2 in 2 out muffler will sound and work fine also.
4 - 88-98 tailgate should work, time to go to the junkyard!
    5 - nice lookin truck!!!

Thanks for all the help. Looks like my best choice for problem # 2 is to bolt it down better. I hate drilling hole is a perfectly good truck. Ah well.
