If your original key was a poor copy, and or it's worn then the copied key will not be correct. The ignition switch tumblers can also be worn too. You may want to take the VIN to the dealer and have them make you a fresh key.

I had the exact same problem actually, I took my 2001 S-10 for an oil change and they lost my factory key without chip in it. My parents brought up my spare dealer key, and they made a copy for me. It opened the doors but it wouldn't start the truck, I ended up going to a professional lock smith and he finally made a key that would fit the ignition but not the doors! So to this day I have to open my doors with one key, and start the truck with another. I have gotten used to it now, I have color coded tags on them so I don't get them messed up. I couldn't justify what the dealer wanted to make me a new key, it was absolutely outrageous! So it depends on how much it really bothers you, good luck with your problem and I wish you well!...........AMY

BTW: Wal-mart payed for their screw up and the oil change, and I payed $1.99 for the key at the locksmith. Look on the dealers face when I turned and walked away yelling profanities at them..............PRICELESS!

When we bought our 2001 Suburban, it only came with 1 key and FOB so I went to the dealer and had another key made there and purchased a second FOB.
