    Default Synthetic Oil

I have a 07 new body silverado it has about 40,000 miles. Im wanting to start running mobil 1 synthetic. I have heard mixed things about this such as you need to start running when its new, older, and if you start running it you cant change back to regular. Any suggestions...

Synthetic oil is all around better. There is no disadvantage to running synthetic other than it costs more. Conventional oil is a thing of the past. Start running synthetic ASAP!

i know synthetic oil maintains its viscosity longer, which allows you to go longer inbetween oil chanes, but you'll still have all the crap build up as you would regular oil within 3000 miles.

why is synthetic better? if its a really good reason i might start spending a little more for it.

I have heard that Synthetic Oil can cause leaks in older engines that were not leaking before but I don't know if that's true or not. As far as switching back and forth I don't think that makes any difference at all. JMO

Most of that crap build up you are talking about is conventional oils breaking down.

    Why is synthetic oil better?
Doesnt break down under extreme heat
Doesnt gum up under extreme cold
    More viscosic
Carrys more heat away from your engine
Extended drain interavals (some poeple that run amsoil never change there oil, they change there filter and top it off according to the dipstick)

Thats caused because synthetic oil can get rid of built up carbon better than regular oil which leaves deposits.

    Worth the risk.

there was another thread talking about synthetic oils in the general tech section and I think this url should take you directly to that thread: http://www.gmtruckclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19388

I just recently bought 19.5 quarts of the amsoil discussed on that thread to change all of my vehicles in my family over to amsoil synthetic because of the capabilities of the amsoil synthetic blend.

No oil is going to get rid of build up and sludge, but a good synthetic will prevent build up and sludge. It is recommended that a good engine flush be used when switching from conventional oil to a good synthetic oil.
Switching from petroleum oil to synthetic in routinely maintained vehicles will not cause clogged oil filters or passageways, regardless of mileage. Sludge, which is caused by poor quality oil and neglected maintenance practices, would have to be present in significant amounts to plug oil filters and passageways. If this excessive amount of sludge is present in an engine, it is just a matter of time before oil filters and passageways clog, regardless of the installation of synthetics.

2nd most good synthetic oils have seal conditioners in them. Thus preventing and possibly stopping leaking from accruing.
