    Default Got a cluster question...

I have a 06 Silverado 1500....my cluster is going bad (stepper motor) and want to replace it. I have another cluster that I can use in place of mine.

Question is will the truck tell the cluster the mileage and hours (via the PCM) or do I need to have it reprogrammed. I always thought the mileage was recorded on both the cluster and PCM.

Any help is appreciated. There is a local place to me and It would take a few days to do, still need the truck though.....

    Thanks,

    Don

You will need to have it reprogrammed. The memory is retained within the cluster.

    Default there is

there is a "black box" on these cars correct??? would that store it also?? what happens when you trade your pcm for a tune or such, lost mileage???

I'll get the cluster programmed, just can't see there being just one spot to save that info

You are absolutely right. The mileage is also contained in the black box. It is not contained in the PCM because it would be too easy to reprogram if it were. If you do get your speedo fixed it's the law that the shop has to reset the mileage if known. If the repair is made through a factory authorized dealer the mileage is recorded into the GM Database I'm told.
