I have a question regarding the 4x4 Posi-lok system. I understand that this basically replaces the actuator to lock the front axle. If my encoder motor is bad, does this system benefit me any? Will I still need to replace the encoder motor if I install the 4x4 Posi-lok? This is on a 1998 GMC Jimmy.
It's been a while since I've looked at it, but, if memory serves, the 4x4 posi-lock only replaces the center axle disconnect on the front diff. The encoder motor is on the transfer case. Some people prefer the posi-lock (cable operated, isn't it?) because they feel it is more reliable. It seem much more reliable than the earlier "thermoelectric" CAD's that GM used, but the CAD on your '98 should be a simple electric motor. I'm not convinced the posi-lock is significantly more reliable than what you have.
And, of course, replacing the CAD isn't going to fix anything if the problem is with the motor on the transfer case.
