    Default new truck question

    hey guys! glad i found this forum i got a 1989 c1500 truck with a 350 out of a mid 70's c10 (?) lol i know its a 350 but i want something way more powerful i know everythings carbbed and set up for an older engine what would be a semi easy swap 396? 454? tryin to keep a budget just want something cool and is me dreaming of eventually having a 4 or 5 speed just a dream (mines auto) is it a crazy hard swap? thanks for all ur help in advance

    Hmmm, you might keep in mind that there are plenty of later trucks out there with5.7 -350's- with TBI and the later sequential injection(96-99 I think).
    You mid 70's 350 might make-new- about 150 hp. My 1998 Suburban 5.7 is rated at 250 hp, and it has plenty of zip with 209,000 miles on it!

    Might consider completely swapping trans, motor, wiring harness, electronic control unit from the later 5.7's. They make more hp, get better mpg(much better!) and there are plenty of them out there.

    Just a thought of course.It would be waaaay easier to just drop in a hot rodded carbed 350, but it will be thirsty. I think GM performance makes a carbed 290 hp 350 for about $2500 or so- not cheap, but double what the 70's 350 makes..

    you couldn't have an easier truck to do the engine swap in.your opions are endless.

    454 bolts right in.may need to swap oil pan.you'll also need the 454 exhaust manifolds/headers.

    You can buy a new or rebuilt 454 Goodwrench for a reasonable price from one of the online dealers.

    If you think mpg will ever become a concern-maybe you plan to use it as a daily driver, or maybe sell it someday as a daily driver, then the small block is a much better choice. It can't make the peak torque(unless you super or turbo charge or N20 it) of the BB but the SBCs can make a lotta torque and a lotta hp.

    For example the 383E stroker-GM performance- makes 435 lb-ft 340 hp.
    Aftermarket 350's and 383's make bigger claims 400+hp and nearly 500 lb ft-carbed. You can probably get away with slightly lighter duty diffs and trans with the SBC. The 454 or 502 are heavy, and require heavy duty drivetrain components.

    Like others have said- you have plenty of options.

    If $$ allows, it usually works out better to get a complete motor done by GM or some well know performance company- rather than finding your own block/heads/cams etc and farming out the machine work.
    You might save a few $$ going the DIY route-and it can be fun- but the pro builders will do a better job(usually). They also make trans suitable for your motor.

    PS Obviously, I'm a big fan of the SBC. My stock 5.7 -209,200 miles- still runs great , uses no oil, and gets 21 mpg hy at 68 mph. Has good zip for a 5000 lb Suburban.You truck-standard bed, no extra cab-will be maybe 4000 lbs-much lighter-so it would fly with 300 rw hp-double what your 70's motor made.

    You could be biting off more then you can chew with your truck, yes its a 350 but the mounts could be different from a 70 to the ones in the late 80's. Along with that would be the tranny most likely the tranny is from the same place the 350 came from, so it could be different then what was in your truck, i believe yours originally would have come with the first version of the 4l60E, I could be wrong maybe it had the 700R4 in it, also buying a crate motor from GM you have to be careful as they are specific as to what they are made for, like the 383E is a direct replacement for the 96-99 vortec 350 in the Suburban.

    may be possible.a blazer trany& linkage assembly may fit.do you have a 4x4 or rwd.

    rwd i love my burnouts haha. ya i just want a 4 or a 5 speed even if i dont have as much power its still way more fun
