Just about every 4x4 (with auto trans) has felt that way to me. I think it is the effect of the gear reduction (2.x:1) and that it usually occurs at such a low speed that does it. You might want to get in the habit of starting out in 2 when in 4L, so it doesn't start in 1.

Is this your first 4x4? When you say the shift is harsh in 4L, is that compared to other 4x4's in 4L, or just compared to high range?

Yep, it's normal especially if you get on it. Have fun and don't break it!
