I waited too long and the tranny started slipping. I had the shop flush 20 quarts through the system and it shifts better now. I'd say go for it.

I say do it. I work at a Jiffy Lube and at a Speedee and we do flushes and/or T-techs to transmissions with many more miles than that, and I've only heard of one of them having some sort of problem later on (probably b/c the guy who did it was an idiot).

What I would is pull the pan and change the filter first. You might consider opening the old filter and looking inside. This will tell you straight up the condition of your transmission. Once you have a new filter installed then go ahead and flush it. It may take 20 quarts if the fluid is real dirty. Remember if there is a lot of friction material in the filter then flushing all the old oil out will cause your transmission to fail sooner than if you just leave it alone. There's a good reason why this happens. If you leave it alone it will fail when it fails. The detergents in the new oil will melt all the varnish and crud inside the transmission, valve body and torque converter. This sludge will quickly plug up your new filter and the party's over in short order.
Bottom line is if your filter is full of fine metal and or friction material you can fix it now or have it towed in during your vacation in the mountains. Your choice.

^^^^^^what he said! never change the fluid and keep the old filter in place. You wouldn't do that with your engine, would you?
Still can't find that damn blinker fluid reservoir.....
