    Default Rusty Bumper

I have a '02 Z71 with a painted rear bumper. The truck is clean throughout, except that the rear bumper is rusting in many places. Does anyone else have this experience? Where do you recommend getting a new bumper? Should I get a junk yard replacement or just order new? Also, the truck only has 80k miles.

    Thanks for your help.

My S-10 and my old 2004 Silverado both had rust starting on the rear bumper around the step pads, I think that is a normal spot for rust on these trucks. I wax mine twice a year here in Ohio and it still isn't enough, LMC has the new painted and chrome rear bumpers but I can't remember how much they are.

Sounds like a Blues musician's name... Rusty Bumper.... plays the trombone...

Anyway! I think it all depends on how bad the rust is. Surface rust, pitted, deep? If it's not terribly bad I'd say get yourself an air needler tool, or something similar, and get the rust off, brush on some rust treatment & inhibitor, and then repaint with a good quality paint. Depending on the colour of your truck I'd even suggest spraying on bedliner or some other type of think rubber/protector coating instead of just regular paint. It will stand up well to abuse, will prohibit rust, and should look pretty bad*ss.

I had a chrome rear bumper on my 2000 Silverado and had to replace it a couple of years ago. Stepped on the rubber foot pad on the left side and went right through it.

Um, could be the area's that you live in, prone for rust? Snow and salt love the food of metal. Springthing is right, attempt to do it yourself first, you will be surprise what the turn out is. LMC are about 250.00 to 450.00 depending on the style....... Me, I moved to keep the rust off, sorry Trplxl23, lived in OHIO and it sucks........

Sounds like it was probably used to tow a boat, dipping it in and out of the water can definatley take it toll on the rear bumper. If you cant find a good replacement at a local junk yard, jcwhitney has some bumpers available on their site or you can take it to the next level with a custom winch bumper for a few hundred more dollars.
