I have heard from several people that switching to synthetic oil will help my mpg. Is this true? Also, how do I go about switching to synthetic oil?

Yes it will help with your fuel mileage . All you do is change your oil like normal. I would suggest that you get the engine up to operating temperature and drain wile hot. Also let is sit and drain for at least a half hour to get as much old oil out as possible. Any synthetic is compatible with conventional oil, it is just a good idea to get the old out.

I've always heard that switching to synthetic is bad for an older or higher mileage engine. Is this true?

If it is really that easy, then I am definitely going to be swithing next time I change my oil. I have also been told that you don't have to change synthetic oil as often as conventional oil is this true? What are the best synthetic brands to go with? I have heard good things about mobile 1.
you will get a lot of opinions on this, some based on fact but most not... I don't have any scientific evidence that mobil 1 is the best synthetic oil, but all I know is that every time I change my oil with Mobil 1 the old stuff comes out nice, thick and clean, not too different in appearance or viscosity than what I put in.... other synthetic oils seem to turn to watery dark brown stuff at the same intervals with the same filter. So that's why I go with Mobil 1, but I'm sure there's other good stuff out there

Yeah I have read about synthetic tranny fluid being too "slippery" for the clutch bands to engage like they should. In my old car I put about two quarts of synthetic with the rest regular...no ill effects.
But about the engine oil... I changed to synthetic @ 150k miles in my old gp. No problems at all.
