Ok, so I am having problems with the intermittent wipers so I've ordered a new circuit board. I found where it goes (on the firewall in the engine compartment) and opened up the box to see how it is in there. Well, when I pulled out the circuit board I found a big gob of pink, waxy lubricating stuff in there. Some of it was stuck to the board, most was in and around the gears found there.
Does anyone know if there's supposed to be a huge gob of the stuff there?
Secondarily, I have the wipers squeak when they are on. It's not the wipers themselves for sure. The squeak is pretty loud in the cab - loud enough for it to get on my dang nerves! Here's what I get:
*squeak* >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<*squeak-eak*
*squeak* >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<*squeak-eak*
*squeak* >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<*squeak-eak*
Anyone played with the wiper's system enough to be able to guide me in the right direction? I've not taken off the cowl or anything so I don't know how anything looks over than what is connected and visible around the circuit board box.
It's just strange that it's loud enough IN the cab to make it seem as though that's where the squeak is coming from... although I'm sure it's not!?
Thanks!

I had to replace my circuit board due to only having high speed and no return to bottom position (newer model but same idea). The grease should be there to lubricate the moving parts. Despite this grease, i think it does heat up in there because mine had a little capacitor-type-thing that had brunt off the board and actually split into 3 parts.
As for the squeak, I'm not too sure about exactly what it could be. I know on my truck if they are not properly adjusted, my wiper arms contact my hood. I would check to make sure the squeak is not a rub between the arms and the hood. Also, because both wipers are run off a linkage to a single motor and module, I would put some lubricant or WD-40 on any moving parts between the motor and both wipers.
best of luck, hope this helps

on mine, under the plastic guard around the wipers, there is the linkage for the wipers, maybe something is loose causing the squeek? or yah, could be the motor driving it...

More than likely the squeak is either the output shaft out of the motor which would explain the grease in the circuit board. If that is not the problem than the linkage is starting to go bad at one of the joints.

I feel your pain Springthing!! My wipers have had that horrible squeek for a couple years, it drives me banana sandwich. If you figure it our please let us know, and more importantly ME!! I havent had time to deal with mine as the nursery has drawn more attention right now. My wipers are also behaving badly, they are working when they feel like it!

Thanks, all, for the information. I guess it's a matter of taking the cowling off or something to get to the linkage... I'll let you know, vnjc. I cannot STAND any type of squeak no matter where it comes from, deliberate or bump-induced!
I have repaired several wiper boards that only work when they want to.
Every time it was cracked solder joints on the PCB.
Always at the connector to the wire harness.
If you can solder try there first before buying a board.
An easy way to tell is when they aren't working wiggle the plug on the motor with the wipers turned on.

Thanks for the tip, Maxx. I'd taken the board out and checked everything as close as possible. Thing is the boards are coated so soldering is even more of a pain in the butt! I tried that route but ended up paying the $15 or whatever it was for the new board.
It got put in just a few hours ago. We'll see how it does in the next bit of rain.
