1991 Silverado 2500 extended cab long bed 454 170k miles ..reverse started slipping then crapped.
I had to winch it into the back yard with the boat winch.
what transmission is it?
what do i need before i start to take it out?
do i rebuild it or put a different type in?
help please advise

The easiest way to identify the trans is to go get a Chilton's Manuel, look up the trans identification. They will show you a picture of the trans pan. You will have to go under there and look at your trans and then the book to figure out which one it is.
If it was me, I would probably replace the whole trans with a new one. But your shop might tell you to just rebuild. I would listen to the professional.
