I have Weld rims chrome over aluminum. I have been noticing some oxidation in a few spots and today a big piece of the chrome blew off in the car wash. I live near Chicago and they use allot of salt on the roads to melt the ice around here. This is the fourth set of rims I have had that did this! What is the solution? I am thinking about black rims will the paint hold up better or do I need to get polished stainless or something that is not plated or coated?
Id go with a powder coat, the paint would probably start peeling with in a couple months.

I hate salt, but I am used to it too living in Ohio. I have had rims go bad after one winter and once they start peeling your pretty much screwed, I know a lot of guys are powder coating there wheels these days. I am not sure about the black wheels though, but you would pay a ton of money for polish stainless. You could go with a solid aluminum wheel, BUT It would require a ton of polishing and restoring each summer to bring them back. If you have to have chrome wheels you could try a sealer on them, Zoops which they sell at Summit Racing is a permanent metal sealer. If you use this stuff you have got to get the wheel spotless before you apply it, and once you do that stuff is like a clear coat for wheels and it is permanent. It will cost you about $150 to do a set of wheels, I have used it on motorcycle parts and it is some awesome stuff!![]()
