Deep or shallow tranny pan
I have an '02 Suburban 1500, 5.3L Flex Fuel 4x4 which has the 4L60E transmission. This vehicle was also equipped with the tow package and has a tranny oil cooler. As I understand it, this transmission can have either the deep or shallow pan which affects the part selection for the filter and pan gasket.
From what I have read, you can tell which pan it is by whether it is flat on the bottom or stepped. The flat one is the shallow pan. Is there any other way to determine which one it is without looking at it (i.e, based on an RPO code or one of the engine/4WD variants)? I have a friend with a '99 Blazer that also has the 4L60E transmission and he ran into the same problem. Autozone only had one of the two types of filter kits in stock - otherwise he would have bought them both.
Also, is it generally considered to be OK to use the generic versions of the DEXTRON-III ATF when changing the ATF? I assume that these still have to meet or exceed the OEM specifications to be able to use the DEXTRON-III labeling.

Does anyone know of a DIY post showing how to change filter and fluid?
