Default Transmission won't shift out of Park

Just bought a 1998 C1500 and it has an unusual problem, vehicle will start while in Park but will not allow me to shift into drive. I can start the truck in Neutral and then shift to Drive OK ( I have to turn the key On and depress the brake) I have been told that it is some kind of an interlock cable. Anybody have any experience with a similar problem?

This would be the result and fault of the Brake Shift Interlock.

X2 on the interlock. Step on and off the brake and the brake switch activates it. If it works in N it "should" also work in P.
