    Welcome to the site
What engine do you have? I have an '89 350 w/TBI and recruited a friend to turn the distributor while I watched the marks. I've used a Chilton manual # 28624 To guide me thru most procedures unfamiliar to me; that and help from threads have served me well.
My only recomendation is that before you start mark the pulley and the timing mark indicator with a dab of paint, makes it much easier to see and adjust and also be sure to apply some penetrating oil to the distributor lock plate bolt, making sure that you get the oil on the threads near the intake manifold bolt hole and not just on the head of the bolt before attempting to remove or loosen it; it'll be really ugly if you snap it off and a lot more work to tap out and remove.
