well if it was "rebuilt" the VIN will tell you what the original engine was, call the dealership or just use google for a VIN decoder, there are plenty of them out there!

VIN, RPO codes, underhood sticker will only tell you what the truck came with. Block casting will tell you what's in there now.

Good point. The casting # will tell you what the block was when cast. It won't tell you the size of the combustion chamber or the bore or stroke tho. Maybe the PO has an invoice from the machine shop?

True, but at least he will know if it's a 305 or 350. I'm sure if the engine were special, it would have been a selling feature, and they would be aware.

    Default 305 or 350

The people that he bought it from have moved. I did call the shop were work was done and the original owner of the shop who ordered the motor and did the work has since died. So we were told! Anyway the new owner said he would have replaced it with the same. Can't say that I believe him. Were would the numbers be located on the block?
    Thanks everyone
