My 1995 Chevy Suburban (C1500 1/2ton Sub 2WD 5.7L) failed California's Smog Checktoday.
I took it to get a diagnostic and was told that I need a new Catalytic Converter and "Top Engine Service." I don't know much about cars, but I know Google and Google can't seem to tell me what a "Top Engine Service" is.
I was quoted around $300 for a new Catalytic Converter and $150 for the mystery "Top Engine Service." Are these prices fair? Are the services likely to solve my problem?
As for the Smog Numbers, my HC (PPM) and CO(%) were slightly over, and the NO(PPM) was double the allowed maximum.
Thanks for reading!!!
I've never heard of a top engine service. It sounds like you need to get a second opinion. Does your Sub have any engine codes?

Yeah, I agree about the second opinion. This post may be shedding some light on what a Top Engine service is.
I'm not sure exactly where to look, but I don't think I have any Engine Codes.

Well depending on the mileage, I would expect the cat needs to be replaced. My 93 has 200k+ miles and the cat failed it's 2007 inspection. Read the post here: http://www.gmtruckclub.com/forum/sho...21&postcount=1
Skip the "top engine service" Sounds like a "de-flood" job that a tow truck driver tried to sell me.
