A/C Noise, possible seizing up

My 2003 is making a fluttering sound from the a/c unit. This got worse until the A/C belt and clutch broke. I replaced them but it still makes the same noise. The mechanic had warned me there were service bulletins that the a/c units were seizing up. Anyone else have this same issue? Seems like I am going to have to replace the A/C unit but hoping not to have to.

Compressors seize all the time. They have a service life, and then they go bang! Just had the death rattle on my 06 work truck and $1400 later I've got the cool stuff flowing again.
