Larger wheels

Im the the proud new owner of a 99 silv 4x4 z71. Its my first truck so please bare with me here.
How big of a tire can put on the stock 16" wheel? Ive also read around and seen mention of "leveling" kits. What exactly is a levling kit and its purpose? Is it something required if larger tires are installed?
Any feedback appreciated...

raises up the front of the truck to be level with the back, i think you can put a 285 70 r 16 on it but i am not certain someone else will chime in shortly. you can also check out the sticky at the top of this forum that tells you how much lift is needed to fit each size tire.

probably a 285 is a little too wide for your stock rim, but it will fit, it will just wear more un evenly, you just gotta check your clearance for the tires leveling kit gets rid of sag in front ^ what he said...

ok thats what Ive been reading about the tire sizes. as far as raising the front of the truck level with the rear, is that just something similar to a lift kit just not as extreme?

Yeah well i put one in my truck cuz its 2wd, most 2wd are lower on the front, but now the newer 4wd are lower so they also need leveling kits, but 4wd can also just crank up torsion keys, it is a cheaper way to lift up the front, i had to do a combo of a lift and level on mine to get my tire size, but it depends on vehicle what height you need to raise so sometimes all people need are leveling kits

I have a 2002 silverado, the tires that came with my truck when i bought it were 285/75r16 Good Year Wrangler, they fit, but bulged in the middle a little bit, not bad just barely, just keep an eye on your tir pressure. And for a lift, you might be looking at a body lift for around $300 for a 3" body lift, I suggest getting either a Leveling kit or a Suspension lift though. BDS Suspension lift, or body lift.

Thats what Ive decided. Im lookin at leveling kits online. Ive been on roughcountry but thats about all I know about as far as 4x4 sites. Im lookin for about a 2 - 2 1/4 lift in the front to fit some 285's..what have you guys had luck with??

I have the Pro Comp leveling kit on mine gained 2.5" of lift, got mine from:

I paid $170 for mine!
