We are the happy new owners of a 2007 3500 Classic with the Duramax. My question involves oil and filter change intervals. We like to keep things a long time and are willing to go way beyond the manual or the readout for oil and fuel filter life in the DIC. This is our first diesel truck but the diesel tractors on our farm get oil and filter every 75-100 hours, is this an option for the pickup and should we use synthetic oil? We'd appreciate any help, thanks in advance, Bill
i work in a chevrolet dealer service department, and we write our diesel services up for every 6,000 miles using conventional oil and filter.
you can use synthetic oil, absolutely! we have several customers who use amsoil with no problems.
a friend of mine has an 05 2500hd with the LLY, and he changes his fuel filter every 10-15k miles. he travels a lot, and sometimes fuels up at different fuel stations. your mileage may vary.
I have changed all the power train fluids over to AMSOIL. Now I don't have to change my oil/filter for about 22k miles (3X OEM recommended changes) or 1 year. I have seen a little better fuel economy since switching it over too.
Just my 2 cents.
Take care,

I change my oil every 5,000( Rotella) and also the allison spin on while I'm down there fuel filter every 15,000 and do a tranny service every 25,000.Been thinking of going synthetic but not sure yet.

I am glad I switched. My truck seems to run smoother and I am getting a couple more mpg with all the fluids and tuner. I have 15k on this oil. I am going to perform oil analysis this afternoon and get it sent in. Since I am still on my first oil change for the Dmax, I want to see how the oil is holding up since I haven't done the EGR blocker yet. I am also considering putting a AMSOIL bypass unit on it after Xmas and run the Premium 5W-40. Supposed to do a little better with fuel economy than the older oil. A buddy of mine switched his to it, and I am tracking how he does before I decide.
Anyway, take care,

Whats the time frame in which you would change your drive train fluids after switching to amsoil, and let us know how the oil is after 15,000 miles just curious my truck is totally stock so far when the waranty is up then we may start changing some of GM.s headaches.

There really isn't a time frame. You can switch at your first oil change if you want. I actually just did my first oil analysis with 15k on the oil. Analysis came back great with the exception of high copper, which after doing some research found that it is not unusual after switching to AMSOIL to have high copper at first because the additives are cleaning things up from previous oils. I had no indication of any other issue that might have caused high copper like coolant in the oil, other metals were within normal ranges. Also my TBN was still at 12, which is what AMSOIL 15W-40 Diesel and Marine oil is rated at. Soot levels were 1.1.
They also said the oil was suitable for continued use check again in 7k miles. I am going to see how long I can run this with analysis and filter changes.
Take care,

In the CF we have the duramax diesel in our milcots fleet (military converision off the shelf) oil and filters get changed once a year not matter how little the vechicle moves.
for our civilian fleet of diesel trucks we run on service intervals depending on the vechicle
and for all of our diesel oil we use the Rotella T oil
