was wondering on my "89" Siverado it has a 700R4 trans which I replaced about 2 yrs ago. It went out on me last monday and the mechanic said that the planetary gears were "toast". I was going to work at the time it happened. What would cause them to go out?
The most common cause is lack of lubrication but sometimes even new planetary gears fail. It also could be the previous rebuild was not done correctly. If the bushings were not changed on the previous rebuild it can result in planetary failure but that's all water under the bridge now. Make sure you get your cooler flushed out real good as this can result in premature transmission failure. Most good transmission shops use a Hot Flush System. The Hot Flush System gets the cooler hot. When the cooler heats up it releases debris that can not be flushed out with cold chemicals.
