    Arrow EATON went out!

88 suburban 454 2wd, 3/4 ton 69k miles.....clicking noise and rough shift between 1st and 2nd gear, traced the noise back to the differential...click click click when the wheels turned, grease splattered over into the right shoe of the drum brakes ( inside)....damned if this wasnt bad timing, had no time to sit on it, had to get fixed right away, put me in a pickle! spent tooooo much to get that differential replaced, expensive part....any body else have one go out? i have heard they are real dependable and tough, but wtf? the other soulution was to just get a gasket job done and hope for the best...was I stupid to get it replaced?

You did the right thing. If you left it alone it would have taken out your ring and pinion gears. I don't see any correlation between the differential problem and the harsh shift or the leaking axle seal however.

thanks for the reassuring words...i failed to mention that a small tubing that feeds in to the turbo 400 transmission had fallen off and was a bit rotted. no liquid coming out of it, dont know what goes thru it, but i put a new tube on it and it seems to be fine now...im not sure if the differential fixed the rough shift or this tube? what do you think?

The tube fixed it. This is a vacuum line to your modulator. The modulator controls line pressure. With the tube rotted it will have high line pressure and shift hard all the time.
