Have been dealing with this known problem on my 2003 Silverado for 5 years now. In 2004, under warranty, the dealer put in the lube kit. Then in 2007, GM covered parts and labor for a new shaftbinding. Now, less than 20K miles later the problem is back, and GM will pay for the part but not the labor ($170). Any thoughts?
I apologize if this is the wrong forum, I am a new member.
Thanks.

The lube kit? What do you mean buy that? We have an existing on this site that you can search for that shows where and how to put a grease fitting on the shaft to stop the problem. I guess I've been lucky b/c my 2000 Sierra hasn't had a lick of trouble with the I shaft.

GM's first solution was what they billed as a "lube kit" to grease the shaft-binding, which my invoice lists as FP-Number 26098419. Then later they issued a new shaft-binding, which they put in for me free of charge after the problem came back. And as stated, after less than 20k, it appears the part is bad again.

Ok. You aren't the only person with that problem. I've heard that even the aftermarket shafts can't fix the problem. I guess its just a poor design.

there is thread on here somewhere that tells you how to fix the problem with a grease fitting, it works i did it. 5,000 miles so far, even if it does come back, all you have to do is shoot a little more grease in there.
i think this was it. http://www.gmtruckclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22312&highlight=steering+shaft

its because gm's on there 13 or 14th design for the c/k trucks i shaft. you can disconnect the end of it and jack it off so to speak a half dozen times and it will be good for a few more months. all it is is the grease disipating out of them from faulty teflon seals
leadpans link is a good quick fix for them

I'm currently fighting with GM directly as the dealer said they'd pay for the part but I'd have to pay for labor at a cool $180. Once GM shoots me down I will probably go with the grease solution as its something I'm obviously going to have to deal with for the life of the truck anyway.
After mine went bad I read up on all the issues with the stock unit and decided to replaced mine on my 03 with an aftermarket one I snagged off eBay... 5000 miles no issues so far..knocking on wood
Had mine replaced yesterday $ 159.98 part and labor. 1 year warranty. It made mine like new I should have done i sooner.
