Steering locks up-help!
Hey gang- searched the archives but couldn't find an answer.... I have an 88 (87 body style) GMC 1 ton dump truck. Problem is when it gets warmed up, the steering will occasionally lock up & not let loose while trying to make a turn. Almost hit a telephone pole or 2 this way... The power steering pump has been replaced, & the steering box was replaced with a good one from a junkyard, & it did it again. Replaced it again; still does it. I'm thinking the PS pump may be at fault. Its a diff style than most pickups, like a heavy industrial style or something.
I have a hard time believing 3 steering boxes in a row are bad....... which brings me back to the PS pump. After the truck warms up, I pull the filler cap off the PS pump & its milky white-gray, & viscosity is kinda watery. Its getting air in from somewhere, getting hot & getting watery. My mechanic claims it has to be something else; I think he's just tired of working on it. Any thoughts? Its been sitting at his shop too long & I need the truck fixed!
