    Unhappy 4WD light problems

The truck is a 1999 Chevy Suburban with 167xxx miles on it. The problem is that the lights on the selector buttons for the 4wd that indicate whether you are in 4hi, 4lo, Auto 4wd or 2hi only work if you tap on the dash directly above the buttons. Even though the lights are not working, it engages into all 4wd modes without problem, so it is more of an annoyance than a severe problem. Could it be something as simple as a loose connection? I would like to know since it would be nice to know what selection I am in without having to hit the dash. When the weather is cold outside it will usually come on by itself, leading me to believe that it is a loose connection somewhere, contracting and expanding with temperature. It has also been doing this for roughly 40,000 miles. Thank you in advance for any help.

Welcome to the site! I have the same problem! It is a pain to have to do that! I took it out, and I didn't see where there was a loose connection. I am still working on mine. If I can fix it I will let you know.

Well its good to hear that it isnt just my truck lol. And that would be awesome if you can figure out what it is, I plan on getting into it tomorrow morning and looking around. If I find anything I will do likewise. Thanks for the speedy reply! this forum rocks.

Hey, lets keep our fingers crossed! If we can't fix it, maybe a member that knows more about this will see this post and help!

I have a 1998 Sub and I have the same problem
I'm sorry to say I am glad it's a common problem!
I though it was just me and my luck and had a bad connection somewhere.
I hope some one knows whats wrong and knows how to fix it (CHEAP & EASY)

If the light in the dash works, even intermittently, it's obviously not burnt out and the wire is connected.

My guess would be the sending unit on the transfer case...it's exposed to all the elements that you drive through, and 10-15 years old, makes sense that it would get tired after a while. Should be a $10-20 part.

Pull it out, fiddle with it with the key on, and see what happens.

I will check that out! I still didn't see where the wires were loose! It is still doing the same thing. I may just get another 4x4 selector. I checked Chevy Parts Club, and I think I will have to go to the dealer! I will check back!
