I have a '98 1500 2wd suburban with 180k miles. General consensus is that the sun shell gear broke in the L460E tranny. I need opinions on whether to rebuild (30k/1 yr warranty $1400-$1800 from a reputable tranny expert) or buy a remanufactured Jasper transmission (100k/3yr warranty $2200). Any pros/cons/opinions? Any particular problems or considerations when rebuilding the L460E? Vehicle runs great otherwise and plan to keep it "forever". It's my daily driver - no towing or off road use.
I would go with the jasper, especially if you plan on keeping it forever
It all depends on the local shop. Ask then what they put in during a rebuild. If they tell you they upgrade the transmission with a new HD sunshell, install a valve body kit and rebuild the valve body with new TCC valves then feel comfortable with the local shop -but- if they don't have a nation wide warranty and you travel, then the Jasper is a no brainer. Jasper does upgrade their transmissions and they make a good unit. Get a price on a SERTA as well from GM.
