I just had my gauges rebuilt and had a oem trans temp gauge installed in the cluster. Everything works OK but the trans temp runs about 125 after about 20 miles of highway and city driving. I'm wondering if the gauge reads low or is this normal? I was expecting 150+ for normal driving. I have a 03 4.8l 2wd with the factory external trans cooler.

It takes the trans longer to warm up then the engine. This is normal. Once the engine has been running for an hour or so under normal driving conditions the trans temp will be slightly lower than the engine temp. So if your truck runs at 220 your trans will be around 200. Once the transmission is pulling weight the temp will go up. 250-270 is normal pulling a trailer, etc. 275 is borderline and here's where synthetic oil shines as it can handle this temp for extended periods with no problems.

i just checked my temp out today while driving with no load my tranny was only at 115. that was after a good 30-40 min of driving on the interstate.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to know it was correct. Looks like it's working correctly and has been running at 150 on extended driving.
