Thread: Trickle Charger

    Default Trickle Charger

    I got a trickle charger for my truck battery.

    The truck sits in the driveway 3-5 days at a time without being started.
    Since it has a 3rd party security system installed (Clifford ACE-100), there's a background draw on the battery all the time. I'm finding it's enough to discharge the battery over the time it's parked.

    So, got the trickle charger. It's one of those 2-Amp types with electronics to top off and shut off as necessary.

    Anyway, the manual on the thing states "Do not turn on equipment that battery is connected to while charging".

    ....which seems to defeat the purpose here.

    If I have to disconnect the battery (or dis-fuse the security system) to use this trickle charger, I can't do what I hoped to do.

    Can anyone shed light on this for me?

    Just a SWAG. The manufacturer probably doesn't want the charger powering any accessories. This would overwork the charger. As long as the draw on the battery is less than the charger output you shouldn't have any problem. If the accessory draws more than 2 amps then the charger would probably be overworked and overheat and fail. Again this is just speculation on my part.

    I can't speak for the one Harbor Freight has, but I have several Battery Tenders and I love them. They are kind of expensive, but they have always worked for me. Here's a link:

    My S-10 has an aftermarket Viper alarm which draws minimal power all the time, which my battery will also die after a few days of sitting in the driveway. I go through an average of 2 batteries per year in that truck, I have never had the trickle charger mess anything up electrically but I think that it eventually kills the battery some how. Just a thought, but the trickle charger does do a great job keeping the truck ready to drive.

    I'm not familiar with the HF brand, either, but we have a 1.5a trickle charger on our grass rig at the fire dept. There are two radio chargers, two flashlight chargers, and the red top Optima plugged into it, and everything works fine.

    My Suburban sat idle for three days, in 10 weather, and wouldn't start. The only thing I have hooked up is the Maglite charger, so I blamed that;)

    Thanks everyone. Guess I'm going to be o.k.

    I'd tend to agree with Jimmiee on the load limit, 2-Amps.
    I'll have to check the actual draw with the security system enabled.
    Without it, it was pulling only 0.3-Amp background, presumably for the computer.

    I'm going to go ahead and try it and see what happens.
    It's kind of a pain to find a dead battery each time I want to use the truck.
    That, and it's a brand spankin' new battery, too. Been fully discharged twice
    in the three weeks I've owned it.

    This last time it read 0.44-Volts when I went and got the trickle charger.
    Can't be good for the battery.

    We also had near zero temps and it sat through that. Was fearing it froze.
    But, seems to have charged up again fine.

    Don't like having it plugged in all the time either, but that's better than dead.

    without trickle charget they would all die!
