    Default electrical problems? [Expired Topic]

    I've been happily driving my 2003 Chevy Suburban Z71 for over 3 years now and I LOVE IT! But this past summer, while driving - my entire instrument panel went out! All gauges, everything! Since that has been fixed by the dealer, I seem to be having recurrent electrical (?) problems: horn is out for the 2nd time in 3 months, button to open back hatch window stopped working, auto locks suddenly stop working then start again, Onstar can't connect any phone calls (don't know if that's connected). What is happening? Does anyone have any info or experience with this?

    Yikes. Sounds like an electrical nightmare. What did the dealer say when they change the instrument panel problem? This sort of thing usually has a genesis from which it starts, like a bad voltage regulator, or something like that. Did they tell you the root cause?

    Knowing the root cause of the fix the dealer performed should help. Has the vehicle had a new paint job? I had a buddy with a datsun pu that had problems caused by bad body grounding after a paint job. Fresh ground straps fixed that.

    Also I had a Ford Windstar that was having door lock problems after a trip to the body shop. Unknown to me the body shop's quick fix was to put a 20amp fuse in a 10 amp circuit and it fried the harness over time. Months later when all sorts of electrical gremlins appeared the dealer found the toasted harness. I ended up replacing the entire harness that cost over $2200 in labor/parts.

    This is a wild shot in the dark, but your wire harness runs down under the carpet in the upper left area of the driver's side foot well. When you drive do you keep your left foot in that corner?
    Next time you get a chance, try some of your accessories that don't work, or work intermittently, like the horn, or check your wipers, while jiggling the wire harness. I've seen breaks in the harness in that location.

    I hate electrical problems, good luck.

    Check the voltage regulater, watch the guage, make sure its not to high or low. Both can cause problems.

    I don't think its in the harnes altho I do remember a case that was a recall in the 70's.

    Someone at the factory, by mistake ran the rear harness inder the seat and when they bolted the seat down it caused a short years later, not right away.

    Again good luck, you are going to need it.
