GM last Wednesday stretched the warranty on engines, transmissions and related parts to five years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. That one-upped Ford, which on July 14 had lengthened its powertrain warranty to five years or 60,000 miles.

Both automakers offer free roadside assistance during the warranties. Both warranties have no deductible, and can be transferred to subsequent owners.

The automakers didn't change their shorter warranties on other components.

Hyundai and Kia offer 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties. Ford says they don't count as full-line car companies because they don't sell pickups. Mitsubishi has a 10/100,000 powertrain warranty and sells midsize pickups, but not full-size pickups.

Chrysler Group used long powertrain warranties a few years ago to battle a perception that its engines and transmissions were trouble-prone.
