Default Coolant Temp Sensor vs. Temperature Switch

I was just looking at some parts on AutoZone and saw that there is a Coolant Temp. Sensor and a Temperatrue Switch. They look similar with slight differences and different part numbers. I know what the Coolant Temperature Sensor does but what does the Temperature Switch do?

The Coolant Temp Sensor feeds temp readings to the PCM. The temp sensor either lights an idiot light or provides signal to the dash mounted temperature gage.

See Wells ignition article on the CTS: Wells

The CTS is the one located near the t-stat housing and the TS is in the block on the drivers side towards the front of the engine.
