Default Equinox stereo replacement / Ipod

I am very disappointed with the factory 6 disk stereo. It's sound quality is pretty low and the CD changer will hang up on burned CDs. Sometimes for a second or two sometimes for a week. I would like to replace the entire system but I know there are some need parts. Has anyone done the factory to aftermarket stereo switch? I have an Ipod and would like at a minimum install an inline FM signal adapter or possibly replace the entire stereo.

I am curious how do I get the dash apart?
    Any special tools needed?
Are there any inline adapters for the vehicle chimes that work better than others?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Chris

This has been now 4 years since this post was made, how does the new model Equinox fare for the stereo equipment compared to the 2007?
