Would a regular OBD2 reader pick up the codes or is it a special code reader? I have an OBD2 reader which I put on it before taking it in and have no codes pending or present.

Not all code readers see all OBDII codes. Also many OBDII code readers will not see manufacturer specific codes. The most popular GM specific code is a P1860 or P1870 on some vehicles which is a converter slip code. This is not a generic code and many scanners don't see it.
To put it in perspective OBD Generic codes start with P0***. Manufacturer specific codes start with P1***.
