Default Smoke from sterring column then accelerato stuck [Expired Topic]

Please don't take this post wrong. I am an ex-mechanic and GM fan. I drive an 05 Silverado and my wife drives an 03 trailblazer.

A good friend of ours has an 09 Equinox. She was turning in to a business when smoke came for the steering column. The car then accelerated and crashed. It accelerated hard enough to total the car. I don't think that she panicked and pressed the accelerator by mistake, instead of the brake. I heard of a similar report on CNN, but did not hear the report first hand. Has anyone else heard of any such problem? Please, let me know if I can provide any further details.
    Thanks
    Larry

Sounds like a Toyota doesn't it! Hey, I worked on those Toy-Novas. That was quite a few years ago!

Never heard of it, she should contact the NTSB and report her experience.

    Default unintended acceleration

I haven't heard of the issue. In a panic situation a driver can cause unintended acceleration. I've done it myself. In a panic, I'll try to mash down on the brake and my size 13 boot will catch the gas pedal and zoom! Instead of slowing down I surge ahead. I've been able to catch myself so I haven't had an accident because of it .......yet.

I'm with unplugged on this one...I've done it accidentally wearing loose sandals but was able to correct it quickly. I don't completely discount a mechanical/electrical failure causing unintended acceleration...but to believe some of these stories you have to convince yourself that the brakes, parking brake, shifter and ignition all decided to malfunction at the same time. (people claim they tried EVERYTHING to get the car to stop) And I also don't think they are all liars either....in a panic situation some people really think they're hitting the brake instead of the gas.

edit- the smoke from the steering column is weird no doubt...what in the steering column (other than wiring for the radio/cruise in the steering wheel) could possibly cause smoke and then make the car accelerate enough to completely overpower the brakes?
