    Default L19 and L29 454 Flywheel Help

Hello all, I'm in need of help from a technical guru on a question that's driving me crazy! I'm trying to find out the difference between a GM part #10101169 flywheel and a #12556918 flywheel. Both show they are for the L19 and L29 CAST CRANK 454 / 7.4L engines with manual transmissions and they are both the larger 14" diameter with 168 ring gear teeth for a bottom mount starter.

Did one supercede the other? Are they interchangeable?

Also, can someone tell me the casting number for the 10101169 part number (the casting number to the 12556918 part number is 10101171 according to a person who has one and looked at the flywheel for me)?

    Thanks,
    Roger

    *BUMP*

Interesting question. I'd like to hear the answer on this one.
I wonder if it's a matter of weight only.

Thanks for the BUMP TrailLeadr, it was a good thought, but the catalog I have lists 30lbs for the 10101169 flywheel so I had my friend weight his 12556918 flywheel and he came up with 30.4 lbs. At this point, I'm assuming that they are the same weight.

If they are both to be used with the cast crank L19 and L29 454s then the counterweight and balance should be the same. The only thing I can think of that might be different is the pattern of the drilled (and tapped) holes. Although, then it would make sense for the catalog to indicate what flywheel is for which transmission, but it doesn't.

I'm hoping that someone out there knows the answer to this question and will help out!

There has to be some reason for the new part number. Obviously the crank bolt pattern would have to be the same, since it lists being able to fit either a crank for L19 or L29. Sounds like the only way to find out is to visually inspect them side by side.

If I had a GM dealer close by, I would check it out myself, but I don't.

    *bump* (again)

Guess no one knows. I have some errands to run tomorrow. I'll try to remember to stop by the GM dealer, and ask if they can tell me the difference.
