Default 82 GMC Vandura wont start when tilt column is up

Hey guys and gals ... great site with alot of info, glad I found it.

    Here is my dilema -
My 90 year old grandpa has a 1982 Vandura that for the most part is a great dependable old van until recently when I found him stranded at the shop becuase it wouldnt start. I say found him because have you ever tried to teach a 90 year old man how to use a cell phone. Anyway after messing with it for about 45 minutes and not finding anything wrong like a dead battery, blown fuse etc. etc. etc. I tried putting it in nuetral and still no crank UNTIL I just happen to lower the tilt steering (which was all the way up) down one notch and it fired right up. It will start in any of the set positions except for when the column is all the way up in the stored position. I have looked for a loose wire everywhere in the column but cant find anything. With the column in the stored position I have shook every wire, connections, and every other thing that I can reach while turning the key but cant get it to crank. But simply lowering it and it runs like a top.

    Any ideas ???

    Default Faulty Column Wiring Harness

It is a common problem. Most often posted in the truck forums.

That should give you a good starting point. At issue would be either a short at the point the wires exit the column and go up under the dash, a faulty ignition switch or possibly a faulty neutral safety switch.

    Check back with your findings.
