We really should start categorizing them as CAI and STR (Silencer Tube Removal) or ISR (Intake Silencer Removal).

Anyhow most get their increase simply by higher airflow.
I agree completely. All you get from a CAI is more in cab engine noise and more air flow. I do the same thing by just changing to a K&N air filter in the stock set up.

how beneficial is just replacing a k&n filter in the stock housing than replacing the whole intake? will i see any difference?

Well as an example. My Dad has a 08 Sierra 5.3 he bought the K&N CAI and its cost $275ish I bought a K&N filter to replace my OEM Filter. He has more in cab noise when you get on it but as for performance gains we are both getting the same Mileage. We went on a trip he had his truck and I had mine and we followed each other to the Upper Penninsula of MI and he got 19.7 and I got 19.6 so you tell me which is the better way to go.

Not a problem. I am all about saving money especially if something is not beneficial. How do you like your gibson exhaust? I have been looking at exhaust systems and trying to figure out what I want. Do you have and sound clips?

its a nice system, it gives good sound, but im looking for more sound than it has now. but it deffinately is a good pickup, the only problem was that my pipes weren't shaped right so i had to get them fixed a little at a muffler shop. if you get a good price on the gibson go for it. but if its the same as a flowmaster or magnaflow i think those would give u more sound than the gibson.
