    He's right. Oil is the cheapest insurance money can buy.

    well im using 5w-30.... in the 5.3

    I ran 5w30, till my 5.3L developed the nast lifter tick that all 5.3s eventually get and stepped up to 10w30, and in the really hot GA summers i steped up to 10w40. But 5w30 will more than suit your motors needs..

    I think you should use 5w-30. I have the same 2000 gmc and I run it with 5w-30 and it is effective to use it.

    i have a 2007 silverado (new body) with a 4.8 liter, i have used castrol gtx 5w-30 full synthetic since day 1...no problems, you can exceed 3000 miles depending on ur driving habits....i just recently changed oil after 5000 miles....my truck is just shy of 54K.

    My vote is for 5W30. That's what Chevy recommends of the 5.3.

    10w-30 got rid of your lifter tick? I will try that if mine comes back. Thanks

    10w-40? I have always worried about the oil wedge (probably for no good reason).
    '99 Silverado 1500,Z71,ext cab,5.3L,50 series Flowmaster, 3" exhaust.
