GM to be the First Auto Company to Build Hybrid Vehicles in Canada
Oshawa (Ontario), Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - GM of Canada today announced that its Oshawa Truck Assembly Plant will be the first plant in Canada to produce hybrid vehicles, with the new Two-Mode Hybrid Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra scheduled for sale in the fall of 2008.
“We are proud to announce that we will build the hybrid version of our award winning pickups in Oshawa,” said Arturo Elias, president of GM of Canada. “GM is making it a top priority to provide our customers with the widest selection of green vehicle technologies that can save them fuel and benefit the environment. This new hybrid truck adds to GM’s fast growing list of green vehicle technologies being engineered or assembled right here in Canada.”
"Our Government is pleased to support GM of Canada’s green technology investment in Oshawa which builds on similar investments made under the Beacon Project,” Minister of Economic Development and Trade Sandra Pupatello said today. “GM has stepped up to the plate with answers to environmental challenges facing the automotive industry through innovative steps such as the production of hybrid, flex fuel and fuel cell vehicles. We will continue to work with the automotive industry on innovative ways to achieve clean air emissions and other critical issues. We remain committed to a strong, innovative and highly competitive auto industry.”
GM engineers or manufactures more fuel saving green vehicles and technologies than any other auto manufacturer in Canada. This now includes:
Active Fuel Management engines that automatically shut down half their cylinders to save fuel in highway driving – built in St.Catharines for vehicles assembled in Oshawa
Building the world’s largest fleet of emission-free Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles in Oshawa – the Chevy Equinox Hydrogen Fuel Cell
Building Ethanol E85 Flex Fuel vehicles like the award winning Oshawa-built Chevy Impala which has the lowest net GHG emissions of any vehicle sold in Canada when running on E85 cellulose-based ethanol fuels
Engineering and assembling Hybrid transmissions and engine systems used in some of the 12 new GM Hybrid vehicles either on sale today or coming to market soon – GM currently builds hybrid transmissions in Windsor for the Saturn Vue hybrid and engineers new hybrid systems at its Canadian Engineering Centre. We will begin producing hybrid vehicles at the Oshawa Truck plant in 2008.
Unlike typical single mode systems available in the market, GM’s patented, next generation two-mode hybrid system optimizes fuel efficiency in both city and highway driving. These unique features make the two-mode system easily adaptable for use in a broad range of vehicles. GM has also announced that the two-mode hybrid system will be available in our Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon hybrids being launched this year and expected to deliver up to 25% improved fuel consumption and in 2008 the next generation Saturn Vue 2-mode hybrid will offer estimated fuel consumption savings of up to 45%.
Headquartered in Oshawa Ontario, General Motors of Canada employs more than 19,000 people nationwide. GM of Canada manufactures a variety of vehicles, engines, transmissions and other components, and markets the full range of General Motors vehicles and related services through 765 dealerships and retailers across Canada. Vehicles sold through this network include Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Cadillac

Not to take anything away from this, but isn’t GM the only company to build vehicles in Canada?

Some GM models are actually exclusively made here for the US too. I don't live in an igloo or own a snowmobile![]()

Ya know the sweet feed reminds me of granola. I'm sure that's pretty much what it is, but I just can't bring myself to try it.
It would be my luck that the wife would get a special blend that time, and it would have an additive in it for sensitive stomachs. But the horse loves it, so it can't be all that bad, can it?
Something tells me I just took this thread to a whole new level. At least I won't be the sweet feed eating, cape wearing super moderator.
Ok, I'm done hijacking this thread now.
